Stirring Dragon Games is an independent game studio based in the San Francisco Bay Area, founded by the husband-and-wife team of Bruce and Laura Gottlieb. If you couldn’t tell from our website, we’re big fans of old school gaming. We’re currently bootstrapping our way to bringing back that classic 80’s RPG experience one byte at a time.
We started Stirring Dragon Games because we felt there was a need for games that awaken the imagination of the player, like many of the classic games we enjoyed in our youth. We think the essence of what made those games special is sadly absent from modern games these days. Our mission is to make games that work alongside your imagination, not in place of it. If you are someone who can recognize the difference, we’re making games for you!
We have the singular distinction of being the first people crazy enough to Kickstart a true 8-bit role playing game. Our Kickstarter for Unknown Realm gained the support of both modern and old-school RPG legends, including Brian Fargo (Bard’s Tale), Tyler Sigman (Darkest Dungeon), Obsidian Entertainment (Pillars of Eternity), and Richard Garriott (aka Lord British, the creator of the Ultima series). We are incredibly thankful for all the retro RPG loving fans who backed our game and can’t wait for you to experience the game for the first time!
About Bruce (@StirringDragon):
Besides all the usual boring biographical details (computer science degrees, veteran game developer, and working for companies X, Y, or Z), what really defines Bruce is his passion for all aspects of design and creating fun games that respect a player’s time, intelligence, and imagination. Like most natural born creators, he has a folder full of game designs and projects he’d love to get around to making someday, once Unknown Realm has been unleashed.
Bruce got his start programming in the 80’s on his Tandy Color Computer 2, followed by his Commodore 128, and spent many of his teenage summers enjoying some of the great classic 8-bit CRPG’s such as Ultima, Bard’s Tale, and Wasteland.
About Laura (@IndieLauraSDG):
Laura didn’t exactly dream of being a game developer when she grew up, but after years of watching her husband endure grueling 80+ hour weeks for other companies, she was more than willing to seize the opportunity to work together on games as a husband-and-wife team. Laura has a background in communications, marketing, and business that’s been surprisingly relevant to the entrepreneurial side of running an indie game studio. As a lifelong gamer with a natural sense for design aesthetics, she also oversees creative direction on our games.
Laura & Bruce have been married for almost 15 years and have four kids (yes, four), one of whom was born after we decided to go full-time indie, because we aren’t really into doing things the easy way and the stress of starting a business in one of the most expensive areas of the country didn’t seem like enough excitement.
People ask us how we manage to do this full time with a family? To which we reply, it’s just like building any other business… you put all your eggs in one basket, forego buying a house, skip the vacations, don’t eat out, cash out any savings or retirement you may have, and most importantly, have faith that somehow your efforts will be rewarded in the end.
